Student Programs

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) offers educational and research opportunities to K-12 teachers; undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students; and university faculty in a variety of assignments.

Using the Savannah River Site’s (SRS) unique resources and state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, interns and other participants support research and development activities, engineering, operations, and other SRS services while gaining knowledge and experience in their field of study.

Internship Program

The SRNS Internship Program provides an opportunity for students attending two-year technical colleges and four-year colleges and universities up to the doctoral level to gain hands-on learning experiences related to their field of study. The goal of the internship program is to bridge the gap between academic study and its application in professional practice.

Internships are available during summer breaks, with opportunities in the following disciplines: Engineering, Computer Science, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Business, and Communications.

  • Receive credit for prior SRNS service if offered full-time employment
  • Receive mileage reimbursement for initial report to work and return to school trips if your school is more than 50 miles from SRS
Eligibility and Criteria
  • U.S. citizenship required for security cleared positions - See DOE order 472.2
  • Must be a full-time student at an accredited two-year technical or four-year college or university, or within one year after finishing a degree program
  • Must have completed freshman year of college or technical school
  • Must possess a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (verified by most recent transcript)
  • Must successfully complete SRS General Employee Training and substance abuse processing
The SRS Apprenticeship School

The Savannah River Site (SRS) Apprenticeship School is a structured workforce development initiative aimed at building a highly skilled, diverse workforce. Through partnerships with government agencies, educational institutions, and local communities, the program provides hands-on training, job-specific education, and professional development for apprentices across three key pathways.

Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive a national, industry recognized and portable credential through the Department of Labor. There is no guarantee of future full-service employment upon completion of an apprenticeship.

The SRS Apprenticeship School Programs (29 total programs)

  • Key-Skilled Technician (4 programs)
  • Youth Apprenticeship Program (5 programs)
  • Professional/Degree-Based (20 programs)

Entry Requirements
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • U.S. citizenship required for security cleared positions - See DOE Order 472.2
  • Must successfully complete SRS General Employee Training and substance abuse processing
  • Skilled technician candidates must have completed ACT WorkKeys Skills Assessments or SC WIN Skills Assessments within the last 5 years and achieved the minimum scores noted below


Youth Apprenticeship Program
  • Must be 16 years or older
  • U.S. citizenship required for security cleared positions - See DOE Order 472.2
  • Must be a rising high school junior or senior in pursuit of a high school diploma
    • All apprentices must have obtained a high school diploma prior to successful completion of apprenticeship
  • Must possess valid state driver’s license
  • Must have personal reliable transportation
  • Must successfully complete SRS General Employee Training and substance abuse processing
